As the new Teacher-in-Charge of Soccer at SKC I am very pleased to welcome you to our website in 2009. With 23 teams this year, soccer continues to be the most popular winter sport at both the Heyington and Waterford Campuses. We are looking forward to a very promising and exciting season, especially at the senior (VCE) levels where we will be fielding seven teams.

Last month there was keen competition from more than thirty boys as they vied for selection as a member of the 1st XI and we congratulate the following boys who have been successful in gaining a place in the squad for the start of the 2009 season:

From Year 12: Matthew Collier, Joshua Colosimo, Adam Fantoma, Kosta Karazisis, Andrew Lightfoot, Spiro Raptodimos, Jacques Rogers & Elias Vitsentzatos

From Year 11: Abiel Chating, Luke Davrain, Didier Imbert, Joshua McMonagle-Ihasz & Edward Ring

From Year 10: Christopher Frangou, Billy Liolios, & Connor Pain

(Reserves: Jonathan De Biase, Luke Fantoma, & John Mulqueeny)

A very special welcome to more than 65 Year 7 students and their parents who will begin their involvement with us as we engage in a total of nine rounds of inter-school soccer matches for most teams this year. The first official round of matches takes place on Saturday 2nd May and there are six more rounds before the beginning of the Term II holidays. After that three week break, we compete in two more rounds before the season culminates in the Soccer Presentation Night on Saturday 8th August.

This year we welcome a number of new Staff coaches and team managers who will be assisted by a talented group of SKC Young Old Boys who have recently completed their Junior Coaching Licence through the FFV. We are also very pleased to again have the expertise of both Mr Jimmy Rooney (a former Captain of the Socceroos) and Mr Ian Lumsden as the Coach and Assistant Coach respectively of the 1st XI.

SKC is very fortunate to have an enthusiastic and dedicated group of parents who are prepared to support their sons’ passion for soccer through active membership of the Parents Soccer Association under the inspiring leadership of the current President, Mr Anthony Baldasso. I would encourage any parents who might be able to contribute in some way to the activities of this association, to make contact with myself or the President - see relevant section on this website for more information.

I wish all members of the SKC soccer community the best of luck for an enjoyable and successful season in 2009 as we pursue our passion for the ‘world game’ in our special part of the world.

Mr Nick Hale

Since at least the early 1900s, when the phenomenon began in Britain, coloured scarves have been traditional supporter wear for fans of association football teams across the world, even those in warmer climates. These scarves come in a wide variety of sizes and are made in a club’s particular colours and may contain the club crest, pictures of renowned players, and various slogans relating to the history of the club and its rivalry with others. In the United Kingdom, the most popular and traditional type is a simple design with alternating bars of colour in the individual team’s traditional colours……..

As part of pre-match build-ups, or during matches, fans will create a ’scarf wall’ in which all supporters in a section of the stadium will stretch out their scarves above their heads with both hands, creating an impressive ‘wall’ of color, usually accompanied by the singing of a club anthem such as “You’ll Never Walk Alone” at Liverpool F.C.[1] or “Grazie Roma” at <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/A.S._Roma" title="A.S.

SKC WHITE 0-1 MGS GOLD SATURDAY 28th February

SKC White had talked up the final match of the season against SKC Navy as the season decider. They assumed an undefeated season up to that point, but it was not to be as overconfidence proved costly. From the start it was clear that it would be a low scoring game as the opposition played extremely defensively in a bid to limit our rampant goal scorers in Iaonis Kamarinos and Michael Wawrzon.

Despite the tactics employed by MGS, SKC looked the goods early dominating the chances of the match, but in typical style, the counter attacking -opposition snatched a goal, against the run of play and were intent on retaining their lead for the remainder of the game. Their counter attacking continued and had it not been for Theo Efthymiou’s tireless efforts in defence, White would have gone down by a significantly larger margin.

Our “wingback” play was also costly as it left us open to attacks and caused flooding in our attacking half. Despite our best efforts, we couldn’t get one back and eventually lost in an unusually low scoring encounter.

SKC white ventured to MLC intent on continuing on the previous week’s result. Within a matter of seconds, they took the lead through Michael Wawrzon. Johnny Kamarinos provided good runs down the wing and set up team mates, but he also extended the lead with 4 goals of his own. The highlight of the match was a fabulous goal from Fonda Makris, where he powered past the keeper from range, dubbed “The Fondastrike”. Theo Efthymiou was a rock in defence, stopping nearly all offensive moves by the opposition, all the while contributing to several counter attacks, claiming a goal himself. Anthony Barone looked comfortable in goals, stopping many shots and providing some quick throws which resulted in goals. The opposition managed to pull 2 goals back late in the game, but they never posed a threat as they were totally outplayed and SKC White also managed 2 goals in the final minutes to completely shut out MGS.

This week SKC had a home game in Darebin.

The first half flew SKC’s way creating dozens of chances. But we failed to capitalize and let the Scotch outfit push through the 2 man defence and look very dangerous on numerous occasions.

The second half was very different from the first. Although SKC were creating chances, we had let Scotch create many chances as well. Strong running down the flanks kept us in with a chance. By now Scotch were putting the defence under immense pressure but could not capitalize thanks to good saves from Daniel Giannini.

In the last 5 minutes, SKC were having more shots at goal and we were feeling the pressure missing open goals. But with less than a minute, Sam Johnson beat the keeper with a volley.

Final Score 1-0

Goal Scorer: S. Johnson

Best Players: Great team effort.

Scotch must be commended as they only had 8 players on the field.

After 3 weeks on the sidelines cooling hamstrings, metatarsals and the like the SKC 3rds were keen to get out on the pitch this Saturday morning. Princes Park was the venue the last time the two sides met in an encounter that prompted keeper Matt Stin to retire to the 4ths in a Shane Warne-like move. Matt could not have asked for a better script writer, his last game for the 3rds in Round 4 was a heart stopper, the best of many of our careers and clearly he felt the sense of ecstasy the win gave him could not be matched. The boys were hoping for a similar performance although before the game we made a pact, a pre-nuptial agreement if you will, that no matter how amazing we felt at the final whistle no one was permitted to pull the plug.

One of our main threats Anthony Viglietti was a late withdrawal from the game. Downed with an ear infection Anthony had clearly succumbed to three weeks of partying, high media scrutiny and hoards of women who showed interest in him on account of his touted big money move AS Roma.

Before this anticipated high could occur the rust had to be shaken off. In a lackluster warm up groins locked up, calves burst and quads twisted due to the 3 week layoff. Fortunately for the 3rds Tom Scalzo had kindly donated some grease enabling the team to dissolve the rust away. Running like a freshly lubricated Holden engine the team hit the ground running. Within 15 minutes SKC’s dominance produced a goal. Parry Raptis smartly converting past the CGS keeper from an acute angle. The smell of a finely tuned automobile could be smelt 200 metres away at Optus Oval prompting Chris Judd to come down and look for a few hints. Unfortunately for the lads Rebecca Twigley was nowhere to be found. On his arrival SKC turned from an efficient Holden to a beaten and bruised Datsun 720. Every time the key was put into the ignition to create an attack the ball was given up or dispossessed by the pressure of the CGS team. Our defence was subsequently then thwarted all to easily allowing CGS to pile on 3 goals before half time. The score at Half Time being 1-3.

This low had never been felt by any of the boys. Ideas were bandied around at half time willy-nilly like the 2020 Summit in Canberra a couple of months ago. Kevin Rudd clearly proved wrong in his decision to keep the 3rds out of the “Nation Shaping” event. For all the talk there was really only one thing needed. It was for SKC to return to the basics and stick to our disciplined Dutch style of play. This Dutch style was unanimously decided upon at half time. It’s only opponent was Giordan Gesos who was in favor of the Kevin Keegan 3-0-6 system of an all out attack long ball bonanza.

With hopes high once again we went back onto the field with a scary determination to win the game. Clearly CGS were intimidated given the fact SKC really picked up. Like trying to get the Titanic from the ocean floor we made steady progress, Matt Peverelle, Spiro Raptodimos, Parry Raptis and in particular Tom Scalzo led the revival. But for a good 20 minutes we could only move the proverbial “Titanic” in baby steps. We kept at it and with 7 minutes to go Giordan Gesos latched onto an aerially weighted ball to coolly slot home a goal. Celine Dion then borrowed some of Tom’s grease to unrust the windpipes and belt out a stirring rendition of “My Heart Will Go On” in an attempt to get SKC home. This musical help coupled with Stefan Odachowski’s mum’s screams of “GO ST KEVIN’S GO C’MON!!!” resulted in the CGS goal being peppered. Parry, Giordan, Dom and Spiro all had good chances to equalize but they went begging.

Belatedly the game ended and we had fallen painfully short. We had to accept defeat from the clutches of CGS something we all struggled with. After the team photo where smiles were fake and Giordan and Parry’s Dad’s took ages to take a photo we instantly turned our attention to our long awaited battle with Xavier who defeated us 4-2 earlier in the season. We had reason to be pessimistic but solemnity was not to be felt, the mood was straight away rectified to one of focus and optimism for next week’s game due to these two facts:

It was on this day in 1822 that Argentinian General José de San Martín met with Simón Bolivar in Guayaquil to plan for the future of Peru and South America in general. This news came to the team via an un-named messenger believed to be sent from Anthony Viglietti. We now had the confidence to plan for the future like the Great Argentinian General. We are thankful for Anthony’s thoughts from his sick-bed. His cryptically inclined mind has taken us a long way to winning next week.

The second spur for the Xavier game comes from Harry Kewell and will be displayed artistically on our forearms. Harry in his move to Galatasaray has chosen the number 19 to commemorate the 19 killed in the Galatasaray/Leeds riot in 1999. Taking inspiration from Harry’s Tribute by Numbers the 3rds with have the word “four” tattooed in Chinese on our forearms to commemorate our own sad day.

Goal Scorers: P. Raptis and G. Gesos
